Thousands of people have been 'fleeced' into buying neatly coiffured lambs they thought were poodles. Entire flocks of lambs were shipped over from the UK and Australia to Japan by an internet company and marketed as the latest 'must have' accessory. But the scam was only spotted after a leading Japanese actress said her 'poodle' didn't bark and refused to eat dog food. link

An open question on Slashdot asks the world's geeks to tell their hairiest IT improvisation stories -- power supplied by coat-hanger wire, cables run down storm-drains -- and a foot-powered backup system:
I used to be the internal LAN support at a large multinational hardware vendor. Most of the company was on Mac desktops and Unix servers, but the accounts department felt they were mavericks who could run their own IT, so they opted for DOS, Lotus 1-2-3 and a Netware server. OK guys, if you think you can do it better, then maybe you can. Go for it.
They also figured that server backups were probably a good idea, since they routinely handled millions of pounds of transactions per day in that one office alone.
And since they were accountants, they naturally picked the cheapest backup solution they could dig up, which was a 40-dollar backup box that used VHS video cassettes, underneath a beancounter's desk, right by his foot. I shit you not: every few weeks, it would occur to him that a backup hadn't been done in a while, so he'd shove the VHS cassette into the backup box with his foot, then nudge the start button with his foot, and return to counting beans. The cassette would pop out when it was finished, and that was proof positive for them of a job done properly. They never even bought a second VHS cassette. Amazingly, the thing never stretched to snapping point, but it was undoubtedly unusable for restores (it never occurred to them to do test restores), making it genuinely much, much worse than useless. Working deep-fried PC shares a pan with french-fries
This hardware hacker was experimenting with liquid cooling for an old motherboard, immersing it in oil in a tin pan. Once that worked, he decided to heat the oil up and make french-fries in it, while playing Quake on the PC that was being slowly deep-fried along with the chips. It worked for a while, then the machine had to be rebooted (and it continued to work after that!)

Eventually, though, the strain of 120 degrees C ambient temperature and the load of Quake 3 caused the computer to overheat and crash. I rebooted it, and it loaded back into windows. Although Quake 3 still crashed when trying to play. At that point, the chips were ready. I turned off the heat and enjoyed my snack while I waited for the oil to cool so I could use the computer again. Link (via Neatorama

video about transhuman tricks used on models The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty (bus-ads with pictures of beautiful, but heavy, or old, or off-average models) has posted a video called Evolution. It depicts an attractive -- but blemished and drab -- model being prepped for a bill-board, from the makeup to the photoshop. It's a very effective short film. Regrettably, it's a stupid Flash video without a pause button, volume control, or fast-forward/rewind buttons. Argh. What a dumb way to do advocacy. Link (via Plasticbag)
